After the US Navy shrunk their nuclear programs, the availability of qualified and experienced technicians was reduced. In 2007 the Nuclear Energy Institute, together with the US nuclear power industry, developed the Nuclear Uniform Curriculum Program (NUCP). The program was established to achieve 3 goals:
➢Achieve a balance in the supply and demand for skilled workers
➢Provide a uniform curriculum
➢Meet the needs of the industry, not just one company
The program is maintained by the National Academy for Nuclear Training and students who successfully complete specific curriculum receive a National Academy for Nuclear Training Certificate.
