Defining Questions

Are leaders developing new initiatives?

Are these initiatives being carried out?

Do employees and stakeholders see progress or recognize change?

“Are you just a manager, or are you a leader?”

Leaders take people or organizations to places that they would not go on their own. Effective leaders leverage their skills and attributes to perform at an elevated level. Ultimately, you judge a leader on results. With good leadership, the culture will typically improve, people will enjoy their jobs more, there will be fewer problems in process execution, morale will improve, costs will come down, and output will increase. Strong leadership will result in lower costs and better performance.

Leaders create initiatives to help drive improvement and move the needle within their organization. Effective leaders often work tirelessly to align stakeholders, build consensus, and then execute their vision. Leaders and managers are not the same thing. Managers have rank and title, leaders might not. Managers stay the course, while leaders change course.

Ideally, natural leaders who do not hold management positions will be promoted, allowing the organization to harness their talents in a way that benefits everyone. Conversely, when there is a leadership vacuum, the negative ripple effects can often be even worse than the positive effects resulting from good leadership.

Ways to Improve Leadership

Provide formal training and coaching for new leaders. Use mentors.

Maintain a questioning attitude. “We’ve always done it this way” is not good enough.

Encourage leaders to develop new initiatives and promote positive change.

Hold leadership to the highest accountability standards.
